The interesting thing is that better digestion isn’t only about what happens after you eat.

Your digestive tract is home to a vast community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiome. What you eat, how much fiber you get, the foods you regularly choose and even how active you are can all help shape the environment in which those microorganisms live.

And there’s more to supporting that environment than simply taking “more probiotics.” A healthy gut environment involves many different players. Prebiotics can provide food for certain gut microorganisms, while fermentation can produce unique compounds that interact with the gut environment. Even probiotics themselves are more varied than many people realize—they can include different types of beneficial microorganisms, including both bacteria and yeasts.

The good news? Supporting a healthier gut doesn’t require turning every meal into a science experiment.

As you get back into healthier routines this fall, here are five simple habits worth revisiting for better digestion—and a few things about your microbiome you may not know.

1. Feed Your Gut—Not Just Yourself

When you eat, you’re not just feeding yourself. Some of what you eat also becomes food for the microorganisms living in your gut.

That’s where prebiotics come in.

Prebiotics are certain substances that are used by microorganisms in the body in ways that can provide a health benefit. Many are types of carbohydrates that resist digestion higher up in the digestive tract, allowing them to reach the lower gut where certain microorganisms can use them.

You can find naturally occurring prebiotic compounds in everyday foods such as onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, bananas and certain whole grains. That’s one reason eating a variety of plant foods can be an important part of supporting better digestion and a healthy gut environment.

You may also see FOS, or fructooligosaccharides, listed in digestive-health supplements. FOS is a type of prebiotic. Rather than being a probiotic itself, FOS provides a food source that certain beneficial microorganisms in the gut can use.

That distinction is worth remembering:

2. Put Fermentation Back on the Menu

Fermented foods have been part of traditional diets for centuries, but lately they’ve found their way back into the spotlight—especially among people looking for simple ways to support better digestion.

Foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and miso are made through fermentation, a process in which microorganisms transform components of the food. Depending on the food and how it is processed, fermentation can introduce or support live microorganisms and also produce compounds that weren’t present in the same way before fermentation.

But here’s something that often gets confused:

“Fermented” and “probiotic” don’t automatically mean the same thing.

Some fermented foods contain live microorganisms when you eat them; others may not because of heating, filtering or other processing. And according to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP), a fermented food should only be considered a probiotic food when it contains specific live microorganisms that have been shown to provide a health benefit.

Fermentation can also create substances produced by microorganisms during the process. One interesting example is kefiran, a naturally produced polysaccharide associated with fermentation.

Polysaccharide may sound complicated, but the basic idea isn’t: it’s a complex carbohydrate made up of linked sugar molecules. Kefiran is being studied for its properties and its potential interactions within the gut environment.

And kefiran doesn’t have to come from dairy kefir. Kefiran polysaccharide can also be produced through the fermentation of non-dairy substrates, including rice. That makes the compound itself particularly interesting when we think about better digestion and digestive support beyond simply adding more probiotic organisms.

The larger lesson is simple: when you add fermented foods to your diet—or look at ingredients derived from fermentation—there may be more going on than just the microorganisms themselves.

Fermentation Creates More Than Microbes

Fermentation isn’t only about live cultures.

Microorganisms can also produce compounds during fermentation, including polysaccharides such as kefiran.

That means supporting better digestion may involve looking beyond probiotics alone—and considering the broader environment in which your gut microorganisms live.

3. Think Beyond “More Probiotics”

Walk down the digestive-health aisle and it’s easy to think probiotics are mostly a numbers game: 10 billion, 20 billion, 50 billion CFUs.

But a bigger number doesn’t necessarily tell you the whole story.

Probiotics are specific live microorganisms that can provide a health benefit when consumed in adequate amounts. And those microorganisms aren’t interchangeable. Different types—and even different strains—can have different characteristics, which is why it makes sense to look beyond the number on the front of the bottle and see what’s actually inside.

There’s another surprise: probiotics aren’t all bacteria.

For example, Saccharomyces boulardii is a beneficial yeast used in probiotic products. That surprises many people because we tend to think of probiotics as bacteria. As a yeast, S. boulardii is naturally different from familiar bacterial probiotics and has been studied for how it functions within the digestive environment.

Bacillus coagulans is different, too. It’s a beneficial bacterium that can form a protective spore. Think of the spore as a protective shell that helps it withstand challenging conditions until the environment is right for it to become active again.

So while both are probiotics, they’re very different: one is a beneficial yeast and the other is a spore-forming bacterium.

That’s a good reminder that choosing a probiotic for better digestion isn’t necessarily about finding the bottle with the biggest number. What those microorganisms are—and what makes them different—matters, too.

Now connect that with what we’ve already discussed. A digestive formula might contain probiotic microorganisms, a prebiotic such as FOS that can be utilized by certain gut microorganisms, and a fermentation-derived polysaccharide such as kefiran.

Each is different. And that’s the point.

Instead of thinking about better digestion as simply adding the largest possible number of probiotic bacteria, it can be more useful to think about the gut as an environment—one influenced by the microorganisms present, what helps nourish them, what you eat and the habits you practice every day.

Probiotics Aren’t Just a Numbers Game

More CFUs don’t automatically tell you more about a formula.

Different microorganisms have different characteristics—and probiotics can include both beneficial bacteria and yeasts.

So look beyond the big number on the label and ask:

Some digestive supplements designed to support better digestion take a broader approach by combining different types of ingredients that support the microbiome in different ways.

For example, a formula might combine kefiran polysaccharide derived from fermented non-GMO rice, Saccharomyces boulardii, Bacillus coagulans and FOS.

As we’ve seen, these ingredients aren’t all the same. Kefiran is a fermentation-derived polysaccharide, S. boulardii is a beneficial yeast, B. coagulans is a spore-forming bacterium, and FOS is a prebiotic that can be utilized by certain gut microorganisms.

That’s a very different way of looking at digestive support than simply asking, “How many probiotics am I getting?”
